Did you know that just over a year ago, Google made mobile-friendliness a ranking signal for websites? That was the sign for businesses globally that the mobile revolution is here and will fundamentally change how businesses and employees operate.
We see this revolution taking hold in the Maximo and EAM community, with not only an increase in efficiency, but with real ROI. Take this recent example of mobility in action seen at a $2B plant.
Maintenance Contractor #1: 120 FTEs, but only 30 Maximo licenses for white collar personnel. Maximo was not being used to its full potential and there was:
-Ambivalent leadership relative to process improvement and mobility
– Stagnant backoffice functionality where Maximo would only track work and run reports
Maintenance Contractor #2: 120 FTEs, but with mobility enabled for white and blue collar work force – roughly 100 licenses (3x increase). In this case, there was engaged leadership to drive process improvement and mobility enablement, and a committed investment to “mobilizing” the workforce. Significant process extensions were added for effective mobile use, including:
- condition monitoring
- real-time reliability features
With this increased use of Maximo and mobility, this second group resulted in a documented 25% labor savings. We can extrapolate that to a savings of approximately $1.4M per year (.25 * ~70K * 80 FTEs = $1.4M).
The move to mobility is more than hard numbers, it’s an intuitive revolution. Anyone with a smartphone realizes having access to your “work” on a mobile device has real advantages, no matter what your job function is. “Everyone,” has work email/calendar on their smart phone, along with the ability to open and interact with attachments. You can deal with issues “anywhere”, efficiently. Maximo-based mobile apps can be the point of efficiency for your remote and operational employees. Overhead and training costs can actually be reduced. You may even be able to eliminate working directly in Maximo for some workers and all of your people can begin right at the point of their tasks. Employees will be spending time doing their work, not performing the administration required to account for their activities.
Process improvements will occur naturally as a result of the implementation of mobile apps. Most pilots of mobile apps will show how existing processes can be streamlined via the use of mobile:
- No more paper forms from inspections.
- No more calibration records in the big binder out in the shop.
- No more searching for Margie to sign your authorization form.
- No more handing printed WOs to the crew each morning… the list goes on.
We understand that as intuitive and unstoppable the mobile revolution is, it’s not always easy. Hiccups in terms of an organization-wide mobile implementation, or even a pilot, can come up in terms of:
- IT Security
- Resistance of User Adoption
- Regional workforce labor regulations
- Lack of cohesive IT support
- Lack of streamlined apps
- Correct device selection
- Cost of managing the overall program
TRM can help clients understand how to enable a mobile workforce and create the powerful applications to drive even more efficiency.
