With the release of Maximo 7, additional tools were built in to help configure Maximo; however these can prove to be cumbersome, create configuration management nightmares and when used extensively can hamper performance.
How do Conditional Expression, Workflows and Escalations compare?
Conditional Expression can do "baby stuff" - like read only, required, hiding fields, changing colors. When your scope begins to creep and your requirements become complex, you will face difficulties. Conditional Expression forces you to enter several different modules to complete your requirements - storing configuration changes all over Maximo - making configuration management an unwieldy, manual process.
And, if there is an issue, you cannot turn off a single Conditional Expression to pinpoint the problem. RulesManager, on the other hand, is a comprehensive system which stores all rules in an XML file that can be completely deactivated - or singular/groups of rules can be deactivated. Your configuration management and trouble-shooting is inherent in the design.
Workflow and Escalations are tools designed to send tasks and communications through a defined process, but not to control complex relationships and tasks built off data changes within those relationships. When used to implement custom business logic (validation, cross population and complex decision branching) users can suffer dramatically due to the "asynchronous" nature of Workflow events and the database strain.
RulesManager is the only Maximo solution which evaluates all conditions and business rules at the point of use, i.e. Rules fire and screens are immediately updated as one would expect from a web-based application.
